周一（8日）是香港壹傳媒創辦人黎智英的78歲生日，也是他在香港獄中度過第5個生日。
《華爾街日報》（The Wall Street Journal）當天以《黎智英生日給中國的禮物》（Jimmy Lai's Birthday Gift—to China）發表社論，指出今年情況不同，美國總統川普（Donald Trump）預定於2026年4月訪問北京，與中國國家主席習近平會晤，這為黎智英獲釋帶來難得機會。由於川普曾公開呼籲釋放黎智英，美方應將此案列入峰會議題，「如果到時黎智英尚未獲釋，釋放他理應成為議程之一」。

社論認為，川普可向中方論述，黎智英的監禁已成中國的「公關災難」（public-relations disaster），釋放他其實是「幫中國一個忙」（doing China a favor）。經過5年牢獄之災，黎智英已是一名年邁的糖尿病患者，健康持續惡化，「如果黎智英死在獄中，將成為中國永久的污點」（it will be a permanent stain on China）。
社論並指出，香港當局對相關負面報導極為敏感，近日發聲明譴責包括法新社在內的媒體「扭曲事實」（fact-twisting reports），報導黎智英的醫療與監禁狀況；另也發函批評《華爾街日報》社論，指其寒蟬效應言論自由。
黎智英子女黎采（Claire Lai）與黎崇恩（Sebastien Lai）近日接受《福斯新聞》（Fox News）專訪，黎采描述父親夏季在無冷氣牢房飽受高達攝氏38度高溫折磨，出現熱疹、體重急劇下降，「指甲變成紫灰色，有些已經脫落」。社論盼川普提醒習近平：「唯一能讓黎智英從議題中消失、避免媒體在川普抵京時公開提尷尬問題的方法，就是在川普到訪前盡早釋放他」。

與此同時，美國國會跨黨派行動聲援黎智英。眾議院「中國問題特別委員會」主席、共和黨籍的穆勒納爾（John Moolenaar）與民主黨籍首席委員克利希納穆爾希（Raja Krishnamoorthi）提出決議案，將2025年12月8日定為「黎智英日」（Jimmy Lai Day），肯定黎智英對世界民主、新聞自由與宗教自由的貢獻，並呼籲中共及香港當局立即無條件釋放他，譴責壓制異議與違反香港人權利。決議案獲多位議員支持，包括楊金、維特曼、麥高文等人。
黎智英自2020年底被捕，面臨「勾結外國勢力」等指控，至今仍被單獨監禁。隨著其78歲生日已過及美中峰會臨近，國際社會持續施壓，黎智英命運仍在未定之天。
