美國總統當選人川普（Donald Trump）7日在記者會上表示，將動用「經濟力量」讓加拿大成為美國的第51州，還在他的社群平台上將加拿大覆蓋上美國國旗。對此，加拿大朝野同聲反對川普的言論，即將卸任的總理杜魯道（Justin Trudeau）表示，要加拿大成為美國的一州就像在地獄滾雪球，毫無可能（not a snowball's chance in hell）。

川普在7日的記者會揚言不排除動用軍事力量或經濟手段取得對巴拿馬運河和格陵蘭島的控制權，並重提將加拿大納入美國成為第51州的構想。稍晚，他還在社群平台貼出一張覆蓋美國國旗的美加地圖。
對於川普不斷羞辱加拿大，加拿大朝野政治人物7日也做出反擊。
才宣布辭去自由黨黨魁的總理杜魯道在社群平台上發文表示：「要加拿大成為美國的一部分毫無可能（There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States）。」他還表示，美加兩國是彼此最大的貿易和安全夥伴，這讓我們兩國的工人和社區都得到好處。」
保守黨領袖普利耶夫（Pierre Poilievre）在自己X上表示，「加拿大永遠不會成為第51州。就這樣。」

川普後來承認，他沒有「權利」將加拿大納入美國。不過，他批評美國購買了太多的加拿大商品，並表示美國沒有義務在經濟上支持它的鄰居。
根據美國貿易代表署的數據，2022 年美國從加拿大進口了價值約4,400億美元的商品，美國還是加拿大石油的最大客戶。
